Electrically Operated Valves for Diesel Fuel, Biodiesel Fuel, Diesel/Biodiesel Blends with Nominal Biodiesel Concentrations Up To 20 Percent (B20), Kerosene, and Fuel Oil
UL 428B
1 Scope
1.1 These requirements cover electrically operated general purpose and safety valves rated 600 volts or less and intended for the control of the fluids specified in 1.2. Electrically operated valves, other than automotive fuel valves, covered by these requirements are intended to be used in other than hazardous locations as defined in accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70.
1.2 Electrically operated valves for use in dispensing devices are intended for use with one or more of the following:
- a) Diesel fuel and diesel/biodiesel blends with nominal biodiesel concentrations up to 5 percent (B0 – B5) formulated in accordance with the Standard Specification for Diesel Fuel Oils, ANSI/ASTM D975.
- b) Diesel/biodiesel blends with nominal biodiesel concentrations from 5 percent up to 20 percent (B6 – B20) formulated in accordance with the Standard Specification for Diesel Fuel Oil, Biodiesel Blends (B6 – B20), ANSI/ASTM D7467.
- c) Biodiesel (B99.9/B100) formulated in accordance with the Standard Specification for Biodiesel Fuel Blend Stock (B100) for Middle Distillate Fuels, ANSI/ASTM D6751.
- d) Kerosene formulated in accordance with the Standard Specification for Kerosine, ANSI/ASTM D3699.
- e) Fuel oil (heating oil) formulated in accordance with the Standard Specification for Fuel Oils, ANSI/ASTM D396.
1.3 These requirements cover valves whose coils are powered by a Class 2 (low-voltage) source. Valves incorporating a high-voltage transformer with a low-voltage secondary as an integral part of the valve assembly, are also covered by these requirements.
1.4 These requirements do not cover valves for use with fluids other than as specified in 1.2.
1.5 These requirements do not cover valves employing electrical parts, including coils, switch contacts and resistance elements, located in the flammable gas containing compartment of a valve. Valves constructed as such shall comply with the requirements in the Standard for Intrinsically Safe Apparatus and Associated Apparatus for Use in Class I, II, and III, Division 1, Hazardous (Classified) Locations, UL 913.
